What We Do: Text

MAINTENANCE

Your website maintenance costs will come from recurring subscriptions or services.

Our service and maintenance agreement plan is an ongoing service to keep the website up-to-date.

TROUBLESHOOTING ISSUES

As a business owner, having your website down means a potential loss of clients. For those who simply buy a website without website maintenance, any sudden issues with the website must be handled separately, and typically billed separately. This means calling up your host and figuring why the website is down, trying to go in and troubleshoot the issue yourself, or waiting on the phone while customer service goes down their dialogue tree to walk you through the issue. Website maintenance with our contracts means that we will troubleshoot any issue, even if it means waiting on hold with your host so you don’t have to (if you opt not to host with us).

SECURITY UPDATES

One of the most important parts of website maintenance is keeping your website secure. From themes to plugins to installed website security, updates are often made to patch security exploits. If your website is left with outdated systems, it is left vulnerable to active hackers, as well as malware and viruses.

UPDATING PLUGINS AND INTEGRATIONS

Like with security concerns, these same plugins and integrations that run on your website are constantly being updating to improve functionality and reduce issues and errors. Leaving these systems un-updated means missing out on improved features and user experience (at best), and at worst can cause these parts of your website to fail, which can result in part of your website breaking or the entire website going down. Yes, it can happen.

CHANGES TO YOUR WEBSITE

Need to change a phone number, update your staff section, or even add a new line of products? Without a maintenance contract, you’re either going to have to put on the web developer hat yourself or sign another contract for the project. We help our clients with minor changes to their website as part of their monthly maintenance contract, though sizable projects may have to be billed separately.  Oftentimes, our clients opt to use it as a “savings” account to where they can “bank” hours to use on a larger project down the road.  Either way – it’s your time to have used however you need. Ask about it.

KEEPING UP WITH BEST PRACTICES

The internet is a changing place, and so are the best practices that social media, search engines, and other websites employ. For example, you may have heard about how SSL is becoming a mandatory part of browser and search engine experiences, and how going without it can affect how people view and find your website. SSL is a great thing to have on your website, but isn’t a user-friendly installation, and if managed correctly, the labor can be covered under a standard maintenance contract.

CHECK YOUR WEBSITE FOR BROKEN PAGES

Broken pages (pages returning a 404 or 5xx error code) can make it difficult to navigate your website and cost you sales. If a high-value page returns a 404 Not Found or 500 server error code, it will cost you money for every minute that the page stays down. Make sure to check your entire site at least once a month for broken pages. Google Search Console will give you this information in your Coverage report, or you can use a third-party website crawler to help you find these pages quickly.

CHECK YOUR WEBSITE FOR BROKEN LINKS

Broken links on your website can make it difficult for users and search engines to navigate your site, and can hurt your SEO. A third-party crawler is typically the easiest way to find broken links on your website, although there are some browser-based tools that will do this as well. We use screaming Frog - although it has a silly name, it's crawler capabilities are top-notch, and it can help you with almost any technical SEO task.

CHECK YOUR WEBSITE FOR BROKEN IMAGES

Broken images make your website look poorly-maintained and disreputable, and broken product images can kill your conversion rates. A third-party crawler is typically the easiest way to identify broken images on any site too large to check manually - just crawl your website, sort the output by "images", and look for 404 or 500 codes.

PERFORM REGULAR UPDATES

It's important to keep all of the software you're using up-to-date. While most software will either update automatically or let you know when an update is available, it's a good idea to manually check for updates at least once a month. If you're anything like us, you may be tempted to keep pushing "update later" - now's the time to get caught up.

CHECK ANALYTICS AND RANKINGS

Check your website's analytics reports through Google Search Console, Google Analytics, and/or the third-party analytics tools of your choice. This is a great way to identify problems early - if you see something out of the ordinary, look into it sooner rather than later. If you're targeting organic keywords, it's also a good idea to keep track of what your site ranks for, and in what positions. Since organic traffic is basically free traffic for your website, having strong SEO in place is very valuable.

PINGDOM WEBSITE SPEED TEST

  • Uptime Monitoring: Knowing that your website is available and accessible to visitors is critical to every business.

  • Page Speed Monitoring: A slow loading page means frustrated users and abandoned site visits.

  • Transaction Monitoring Tools: Ensure your customers always have a smooth experience.

GOOGLE'S WEBMASTER TOOLS

Purpose: Website Analysis

Perhaps the best way to understand the way Google sees your site is to ask Google. Google's Webmaster Tools are novice-friendly resources that explain the fundamentals of Google search.

For example, Google's Fetch as Google tool allows you to see a particular URL as Google sees it, which is critical when troubleshooting for poor SEO performance. The information returned can help you modify the page in question for better results, and can even help you isolate problematic code when you believe your site's been hacked.

Another great feature of Google Webmaster Tools is PageSpeed Insights. This SEO tool measures the performance of both your desktop and mobile site in terms of speed. With mobile search queries surpassing desktop searches, page speed is becoming increasingly important to businesses that want to hold on to their visitors.

"PageSpeed Insights evaluates how well a page follows common performance best practices and computes a score from 1-100 that estimates its performance headroom," according to Google Developers. That score can be Good, as in 80 or above; Medium, as in 60 to 79; or Low, as in 0 to 59.

AS A BONUS,

we provide the following extra features, which are usually extra cost - all included!

What We Do: Text

ESSENTIAL EXPENSES
ALL INCLUDED WITH MONTHLY SERVICE PLAN

Below are several unavoidable expenses and average example costs that come with running a website.

Black and White Star in Circle

DOMAIN NAME

Why you need it: The URL (a.k.a. domain name), is what people type in their browser to get to your website. Without one, the only way to visit your site would be to type in its IP address. What it’ll cost: Usually between $10 and $20. For a customized domain extension (such as .restaurant, .online, etc.), you can expect to pay premium rates as high as $200 and $300 per year, depending on your choice. How often you’ll pay for it: Annually, unless you prepay for multiple years in advance.

SSL CERTIFICATE

Why you need it: SSL (secure socket layer) certificates encrypt sensitive data like credit card numbers and personal information. An SSL certificate is a must if you run an ecommerce website as it secures and protects your customers sensitive data and personal information from being intercepted. What it’ll cost: SSL certificates are issued by certification authorities (CA’s) and range from $10 a month to as high as $1000 a month. How often you’ll pay for it: Annually, unless you prepay for multiple years in advance.

WEBSITE HOSTING

Why you need it: Purchasing a domain name is likened to acquiring land: you’ll have an address, but you’ll need something there to contain all your stuff. In this example, web hosting is your land, and web content is your “stuff”. What it’ll cost: Web hosting companies offer shared hosting plans that range from around $10 a month to as high as $99 a month for managed hosting. The more traffic your website gets, and the more features you add to your site, the higher your price will be. How often you’ll pay for it: Many web hosts offer monthly and annual plans. The cheaper rate is obtained by paying for a yearly hosting plan.

RESPONSIVE WEB DESIGN (RWD)

Why you need it: In 2015, Google began favoring websites that were mobile friendly by ranking them higher than websites that weren’t designed responsively. Responsive websites can detect which platform the website is being used on, and can tailor the layout for screen size purposes. What it’ll cost: Most websites designed today are already responsive. Upgrading an older theme or website, however, could cost you as much as $2,000 to do. How often you’ll pay: Getting your website to be response is a one-time task.

USER-FRIENDLY

Usability has always been of key importance in a successful website. Websites with an intuitive design, and with images and aspects that are pleasing to the eye are going to attract more customers than those without these features.
A simple, intuitive, and functional navigation is another important feature to focus on. If customers can’t easily make their way around your site, they aren’t likely to stay long.
The speed at which your pages load also have a strong impact on users in the coming year. Quickly loading pages and simple ways to get to specific information will be critical in setting your website apart from the competition.
